The Great Mosque

The Great Mosque of Tivaouane is one of the most important religious centres in Senegal. Its magnificent architecture reflects the country's Islamic structure and cultural heritage. Located approximately 90 km east of Dakar, the town of Tivaouane is considered one of the main religious centres in West Africa. This mosque plays a vital role as both a place of worship and a centre of religious education for the Muslim communities in the region.
After four years of intensive work, the mosque was officially handed over to Serigne Babacar Sy Mansour on September 14, 2024. This magnificent ceremony took place in the presence of Prime Minister Ousmane Sonko and was held on the eve of Gamou, the event commemorating the birth of the Prophet. The inauguration was attended by thousands of Muslims from all over the country and abroad.

Project Details

The transformation of the Tivaouane Grand Mosque is seen as an important step towards preserving Senegal’s Islamic heritage and passing it on to future generations. It continues to meet the needs of the Muslim community in the region by providing a modern and spacious place for worship and education.
Following the renovations, the mosque's surface area was increased to 24 thousand square meters and its worship capacity was increased to 39 thousand people. A large courtyard of 12,830 square meters was added, 10,000 square meters of which was allocated for worship. In addition, modern cleaning facilities and other infrastructure works were built, turning the mosque into both a functional and spiritual center.
